When your IPTV LEX activation email arrives, it contains two sets of details: an M3U playlist URL and an Xtream Codes login made up of a server URL, a username and a password. Both unlock exactly the same channels and library. The difference is in how your player app receives and organises that content, and that difference shows up every day in how fast the app loads, how tidy the menus are and whether the TV guide works.
This guide explains both formats in plain terms, shows which apps support which, and gives a clear recommendation for each type of device.
What is an M3U playlist?
M3U is an old, simple file format: a text list of stream addresses, one after another, each with a short description line above it. The extended version used for IPTV, often called M3U8 or M3U Plus, adds tags such as the channel name, logo, group (category) and an ID that links the channel to the TV guide.
Your M3U URL is a web link that, when opened, returns that list. The player downloads it, reads every line and builds the channel menu from it. A single line looks roughly like a channel name, a logo address, a group title, then the stream link underneath.
Strengths of M3U
- Near-universal support. VLC, Kodi, Perfect Player, GSE Smart IPTV, TiviMate and many smart TV apps all accept an M3U link.
- One thing to copy. You paste a single URL instead of three separate fields.
- Easy to inspect. You can open the file in a text editor to check what is in it.
Weaknesses of M3U
- Large file. With 25,000+ channels plus movies and series, the playlist is big. Low-memory devices can take a long time to load it or crash partway.
- Static snapshot. The app only sees changes when it re-downloads the list. If you never refresh, new channels and new VOD titles do not appear.
- VOD is flat. Movies and episodes often appear as long channel-style lists rather than browsable posters with seasons and descriptions.
- Separate EPG link. Many apps need a second URL (XMLTV) for the TV guide.
What is Xtream Codes?
Xtream Codes is a login method rather than a file. You enter three things in your app: the server URL, your username and your password. The app then talks to the server through an API, asking for live categories, the movie library, series with seasons and episodes, and EPG data as separate, smaller requests.
Because the app asks for content in pieces, it does not need to swallow a huge file in one go. It also means the menus are built the way the server organises them: live TV, movies and series in their own sections, each with categories, posters and plot summaries.
Strengths of Xtream Codes
- Faster on modest hardware. Loading in small chunks suits Fire TV Sticks and older Android boxes.
- Always current. New channels and the daily VOD additions appear automatically.
- Proper VOD and series layout. Posters, seasons, episode lists and resume points.
- EPG built in. Most apps pull the TV guide from the same login with no extra link.
- Account info visible. Many apps show your expiry date and connection count in a settings screen.
Weaknesses of Xtream Codes
- Not every app supports it. VLC and some basic smart TV players only take M3U.
- Three fields to type. On a TV remote that is more fiddly than pasting one link, though it only happens once.

Which apps support which format
Here is how the common players handle the two options. Our best IPTV players guide goes into each app in more detail.
- IPTV Smarters Pro - both. Choose 'Login with Xtream Codes API' for the best result.
- TiviMate - both. Pick the Xtream Codes option when adding a playlist.
- GSE Smart IPTV - both, with Xtream Codes listed under remote playlists.
- VLC - M3U only. Good for a quick test on a computer, not for daily TV use.
- Kodi (PVR IPTV Simple Client) - M3U plus a separate EPG link.
- MAG boxes and Enigma2 - use their own portal or bouquet setup. Contact support and we will send the right details.
Our recommendation by device
- Fire TV Stick and Android TV boxes: Xtream Codes in IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate. Loads fast and keeps memory use low. See the Fire TV setup guide or the Android box guide.
- Samsung and LG smart TVs: use whichever the app supports. Many TV apps take M3U only, and that works fine as long as you refresh it now and then. Full steps in the smart TV setup guide.
- Apple TV, iPhone and iPad: Xtream Codes in an app that supports it, for proper VOD browsing.
- Windows and Mac: Xtream Codes in a dedicated player for regular use; M3U in VLC for a quick check.
Troubleshooting each format
M3U will not load or loads forever
- Paste the link into a web browser. If it starts downloading a file, the link is fine and the issue is the app or device memory.
- Clear the app cache, or switch to Xtream Codes if the app allows it.
- Make sure the app is not set to load all VOD inside the live list. Some apps let you hide those groups.
Xtream Codes says invalid login
- Re-type the server URL with the port. Leave off anything after the port unless the email includes it.
- Check your subscription has not expired.
- Make sure you are not already streaming on another device if your plan covers one connection.
No TV guide
On Xtream Codes, open the app settings and run an EPG update; the first load can take a few minutes. On M3U, add the EPG link provided by support. If times look shifted, adjust the EPG time offset in the app's settings to match your time zone.
The short answer
If your app supports Xtream Codes, use it. You get faster loading, automatic updates, a proper movie and series layout and an EPG that works without extra steps. Keep the M3U link for apps that accept nothing else, and for quick tests in VLC. IPTV LEX sends both with every subscription and every free trial, so you can try each format and keep whichever feels better. Still stuck? Frequently asked questions
Do M3U and Xtream Codes give different channels?+
No. Both unlock the same IPTV LEX channels, movies and series. The only difference is how your app loads and organises the content.
Why is my M3U playlist so slow to load?+
A full playlist with thousands of channels and VOD titles is a large file, and low-memory devices struggle with it. Switching to an Xtream Codes login usually fixes the problem because the app loads content in smaller pieces.
Can I use both formats at the same time?+
You can add both to different apps or devices, but your plan's connection limit still applies. A single-device plan allows one stream at a time regardless of the format.
Where do I find my M3U link and Xtream Codes details?+
Both are in the activation email IPTV LEX sends within minutes of signing up or starting a trial. If you cannot find it, check spam or contact support on WhatsApp or at support@iptvlex.com.
Does VLC support Xtream Codes?+
No. VLC only plays M3U playlists. It is handy for a quick test on a computer, but a dedicated IPTV player gives a much better daily experience.
