How to Set Up IPTV on Apple TV (Step-by-Step Guide)

Apple TV is one of the smoothest IPTV players around. Here is how to install a player, add your IPTV LEX login and get the guide working.

Apple TV is a great box for IPTV. The Apple TV 4K in particular has plenty of processing power, a reliable Wi-Fi chip, an Ethernet port on most models and an operating system that rarely slows down over time. Live channels switch quickly, 4K streams play smoothly, and the Siri Remote's touch surface makes scrolling through a long channel list easy.

Unlike Android devices, Apple TV only installs apps from the App Store, so there is no sideloading. That makes setup simpler: you choose a player, download it, and type in your login. This guide walks through the whole process with an IPTV LEX subscription or free trial.

What you need

  • An Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K running a recent version of tvOS. The 4K models are recommended for FHD and 4K channels.
  • An internet connection of at least 10 Mbps for HD, or 25 Mbps for 4K. Ethernet is best if your model has the port.
  • Your IPTV LEX login: the Xtream Codes server URL, username and password from your activation email. Start a free trial if you do not have one yet.
  • An Apple ID signed in on the Apple TV so you can download apps.

Step 1: Choose a player app

The App Store has several IPTV players for tvOS. These are the ones we recommend for IPTV LEX:

AppLogin typeWhy choose it
Smarters Player Lite (IPTV Smarters)Xtream Codes, M3UFamiliar layout, separate Live / Movies / Series, built-in EPG
GSE Smart IPTVXtream Codes, M3UMany settings, supports external EPG links
iPlayTVM3UClean interface, popular with Apple TV owners (paid app)
IPTVXXtream Codes, M3UModern design with a strong focus on VOD (paid features)

If you are not sure, start with Smarters Player Lite. It is free, uses the Xtream Codes login, and organises the 60,000+ movies and series into proper sections. Our best IPTV players comparison covers the alternatives in more depth. App names and pricing in the App Store can change, so check the current listing before buying anything.

Step 2: Install the app

  1. From the Apple TV home screen, open the App Store.
  2. Select Search at the top and type the app name, for example 'Smarters Player Lite'.
  3. Select the app, then choose Get. Confirm with your Apple ID password or Face ID on your iPhone if asked.
  4. Wait for the download to finish, then choose Open.

Step 3: Enter your IPTV LEX login

These steps are for Smarters Player Lite. Other apps use similar wording.

  1. On first launch, accept the terms and choose Login with Xtream Codes API.
  2. Any name: type something to identify the account, for example 'IPTV LEX'.
  3. Username: copy it exactly from your email. It is case-sensitive.
  4. Password: copy it exactly as well.
  5. URL: enter the server URL from your email, including http:// and the port number after the colon.
  6. Select Add User. The app downloads the live channels, movies, series and TV guide. The first load can take a minute or two.

If your app only accepts M3U, paste the M3U playlist URL from the same email instead. The M3U vs Xtream Codes guide explains why Xtream Codes is usually the better choice where it is available.

Step 4: Load the TV guide

With an Xtream Codes login, the EPG usually loads automatically. If the guide is empty:

  • Open the app's Settings and look for Install EPG or Update EPG, then run it and wait a few minutes.
  • If programme times are shifted by exactly one or more hours, set the EPG time shift or time zone in settings.
  • In M3U-only apps, add the EPG (XMLTV) link supplied by support in the app's EPG section.

Step 5: Tune the settings

A few changes on the Apple TV itself make IPTV look and behave better:

  1. Match frame rate and dynamic range. Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content and turn on Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. Sport and film then play at their native frame rate without judder.
  2. Set the output format. In Settings > Video and Audio > Format, choose 4K SDR if your TV supports 4K. Letting Match Content switch to HDR when needed avoids washed-out SDR channels.
  3. Use Ethernet. If your Apple TV has a port and the router is reachable, a cable is the most reliable upgrade you can make.
  4. Pick the right stream version. Many channels come in HD, FHD and 4K versions. If 4K stutters on your connection, use FHD.
  5. Build favourites. In Smarters, long-press a channel to add it to favourites so your regular channels are one click away.

Using the app day to day

Live TV

Open Live TV, choose a category such as a country or sports, and select a channel. Swipe up and down on the remote's touch surface to change channels during playback, or press the back button to return to the list. Channels with catch-up show an icon; open the guide on that channel and pick a programme that has already aired to play it from the start.

Movies and series

The Movies and Series sections show posters and descriptions. Series are organised by season and episode, and the app remembers where you stopped so you can resume. The library is updated daily, so use Refresh in settings if a new title is not showing yet.

Several Apple devices

The same app and login work on iPhone and iPad. A standard plan allows one stream at a time, so if family members watch on different devices simultaneously, look at the multi-device plans, which cover 2 to 5 connections.

Troubleshooting

ProblemFix
Invalid login or authorisation failedRe-enter the URL with http:// and the port; check username and password case; confirm the subscription is active

Empty TV guideRun Update EPG in settings and wait a few minutes
Guide times wrongAdjust EPG time shift or time zone
App feels slow after weeks of useForce-close it: double-press the TV button, swipe the app up, reopen

For persistent stutters, our IPTV buffering fix guide works through network and device causes one by one. And if you get stuck at any step, IPTV LEX support is available 24/7 on WhatsApp or at support@iptvlex.com.

Ready to watch

That is the whole setup: one app from the App Store, one login, and a quick pass through the settings. If you are testing on a trial, give it a full evening of live TV on the Apple TV before you decide. When you are ready, compare plan lengths on the IPTV LEX subscriptions page or our pricing page.
