How to Set Up IPTV on a Smart TV: Samsung, LG and Android TV

No stick or box needed. How to get IPTV running directly on Samsung Tizen, LG webOS and Android-based smart TVs, with the right app for each.

By the IPTV LEX Team 7 min readUpdated

If your TV already connects to the internet, you may not need any extra hardware to watch IPTV. Samsung, LG and Android-based smart TVs can all run IPTV player apps directly, which means one less remote, one less HDMI input and nothing to plug in behind the screen.

The catch is that each TV platform has its own app store and its own rules, so the steps are different for each brand. This guide covers the three main platforms: Samsung (Tizen), LG (webOS) and Android TV / Google TV, which is used by Sony, Philips, TCL, Hisense and others. Have your IPTV LEX login email ready before you start.

First, check which system your TV runs

The brand on the front of the TV does not always tell you the operating system. Here is the quick way to identify it.

TV brandOperating systemApp storeSide-loading allowed?
Samsung (2017 and newer)TizenSamsung Smart HubNo
LG (2016 and newer)webOSLG Content StoreNo
Sony, Philips, TCL, Hisense (many models)Android TV / Google TVGoogle Play StoreYes
Some TCL, Hisense, InsigniaFire TV built inAmazon AppstoreYes
Some Hisense modelsVIDAAVIDAA StoreNo

If your menu has a Google Play Store icon, follow the Android TV section. If it says Smart Hub, you have Tizen. If the home screen is a row of coloured cards along the bottom, it is almost certainly webOS. TVs with Fire TV built in work exactly like a Firestick, so use our Firestick setup guide.

Samsung smart TV (Tizen)

Samsung does not allow apps from outside its own store, so you are limited to IPTV players that Samsung has approved. Several good ones are available, and most offer a free trial period inside the app before asking for a small one-time or yearly licence from the app developer (separate from your IPTV subscription).

Recommended apps on Samsung

  • IPTV Smarters Pro where it is available in your region. It supports the Xtream Codes login and shows live TV, movies and series in separate sections.
  • Smart IPTV and SET IPTV, which load an M3U playlist through a web page using your TV's MAC address.
  • IBO Player and similar players that accept both M3U links and Xtream Codes details.

Install steps

  1. Press the Home button and open Apps.
  2. Select the magnifying glass and search for the player by name.
  3. Choose Install, then Open once it finishes.
  4. If the app shows a MAC address and a device key, write them down. You will enter them on the app developer's website along with your M3U link.
  5. If the app has an Xtream Codes or Login option, enter your username, password and server URL from the IPTV LEX email instead.

LG smart TV (webOS)

LG works much like Samsung: no side-loading, but a decent choice of approved players in the LG Content Store.

  1. Press the Home button on the Magic Remote and open the LG Content Store (on newer models simply called Apps).
  2. Search for an IPTV player such as IPTV Smarters Pro, SET IPTV, Smart IPTV or IBO Player.
  3. Install it and open it.
  4. Choose the Xtream Codes login if offered and type in your details. The Magic Remote's pointer makes typing much quicker than arrow keys.
  5. For MAC-based apps, note the MAC address and upload your M3U link from another device, as described above.

LG TVs from roughly 2019 onwards handle 4K streams well. Older webOS versions can feel slow with very large playlists, so hiding unwanted channel groups in the app helps a lot.

Android TV and Google TV

Android-based TVs are the most flexible. You get the full Google Play Store and you can also side-load apps, so every major IPTV player is available.

  1. Open the Google Play Store from the home screen.
  2. Search for TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro or another player and select Install.
  3. If a player is not in the Play Store, install the Downloader app, then go to Settings > Device Preferences > Security & restrictions > Unknown sources and allow Downloader. On Google TV the path is Settings > System > About, click Android TV OS build seven times to enable developer mode, then allow unknown apps under Apps > Security & restrictions.
  4. Open the player and log in with Xtream Codes (recommended) or paste your M3U URL.
  5. Wait for the first channel and EPG download to finish before browsing.

Our guide to IPTV on Android boxes goes deeper into Android-specific settings such as hardware decoding and buffer size, and those apply to Android TVs too.

Xtream Codes or M3U on a TV?

IPTV LEX includes both formats with every plan. On a TV, Xtream Codes is usually the better choice because the app pulls in the programme guide, the 60,000+ title VOD library and catch-up automatically, with no long URL to type. Use M3U when the app only accepts playlists (common with MAC-based players). The technical differences are covered in M3U vs Xtream Codes.

Settings to change after installing

  • Wired connection. Smart TVs almost always have an Ethernet port. Use it. A cable is the single best fix for freezing on a TV that sits far from the router.
  • Turn off motion smoothing (Samsung Auto Motion Plus, LG TruMotion) for sport. It can add input lag and odd artefacts on fast motion.
  • Set the picture mode to Movie or Filmmaker for films and Standard for live sport.
  • Disable quick start / instant on if the app misbehaves after the TV wakes. A full power cycle clears the app's memory.
  • Keep the TV firmware updated under the support or system menu. Players often depend on recent firmware for smooth 4K decoding.

Finding your way around after the first login

The first time the app loads, you are looking at a very large catalogue: 25,000+ live channels and 60,000+ movies and series. A few minutes of tidying up makes the TV far easier to use day to day, especially for anyone else in the family.

  • Hide whole country groups you will never watch. Most TV players let you hide or lock categories from the channel list menu.
  • Build a favourites list of the 15-20 channels you actually use. On a TV remote, this is the difference between two clicks and two minutes of scrolling.
  • Check the guide. If the EPG is empty, refresh it from the app settings and wait a few minutes. If times are off, adjust the EPG time shift to your time zone.
  • Try catch-up. Channels with a clock or rewind icon let you replay programmes from the past few days.
  • Test a 4K title if you have a 4K TV, to confirm your connection holds up before a big event.

If anything looks wrong at this stage, such as missing categories or a login that keeps dropping, the IPTV LEX support team answers 24/7 on WhatsApp and at support@iptvlex.com. The contact page has the details.

When a streaming stick is the better option

Built-in apps are convenient, but they are not always the best experience. Consider a stick or box if:

  • Your TV is more than five or six years old and the menus feel sluggish.
  • You want TiviMate on a Samsung or LG TV, where it is not available.
  • Your preferred player keeps being removed from the TV's app store in your region.
  • You want recording or multiple playlists, which are easier on Android-based devices.

A Fire TV Stick or an Android TV box costs little and gives you every player option. The full list of compatible hardware is on our devices page and on iptvlex.com/supported-devices.

Watching on several TVs at once

You can install the app on every TV in the house, but the number of channels playing at the same moment depends on your plan. A living room TV and a bedroom TV running simultaneously need a 2-device plan. See the multi-device options for 2 to 5 connections, or start with a single screen on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch IPTV on a Samsung TV without a Firestick?+

Yes. Install an approved IPTV player from the Samsung Smart Hub, such as IPTV Smarters Pro, SET IPTV or IBO Player, and log in with your M3U link or Xtream Codes details.

Is TiviMate available on LG or Samsung TVs?+

No, TiviMate is an Android app. It runs on Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV and Android boxes. On Samsung or LG, use one of the players available in their app stores.

Why does my smart TV app ask for a MAC address?+

Some TV players link your playlist to the TV's unique MAC address. You enter that address and your M3U link on the app developer's website, then restart the app to load the channels.

Do smart TV IPTV apps cost money?+

Some are free and some charge a small licence fee after a trial period. That fee goes to the app developer and is separate from your IPTV LEX subscription.

What internet speed does a smart TV need for IPTV?+

About 10 Mbps per screen for HD and 20-25 Mbps for 4K. A wired Ethernet connection gives the most stable result.
